Afghan first VP General Abdul Rashid Dostum met on Wednesday with US state department’s special representative for Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad in Ankara, capital of Turkey.
Both sides discussed the peace process, holding consultative Loya Jirga, and the presidential palace, the press office of first VP said in a statement.
During the meeting, First Vice President thanked Mr. Khalilzad and his delegation for paving the ground for peace talks with the Taliban as well as the US commitments to end the war and ensure lasting stability in Afghanistan.
General Dostum considered the end of the forty-year war through inclusive intra-Afghan peace talks, ensuring lasting peace by preserving the 17-year achievements in Afghanistan as the great aspiration of Afghan people, adding that “to achieve these goals, the Afghan people first need to build trust within the system and national consensus throughout the country”.
“Such a consensus can be formed through an understanding among the main elements of the society, including the government, political parties, diverse strata and different thoughts, including women and youths,”
According to the statement, both sides emphasized the necessity of a national consensus to win peace talks, to make the necessary consultations on the agenda and setting goals for the success of the peace consultative Jirga and the vital importance of ensuring the transparency of the upcoming elections in order to succeed democracy culture.
