Kandahar Police Chief Gen. Raziq Survives Suicide Attack

Three suicide bombers attacked the residence of the police chief of southern Kandahar province, leaving the militants and at least two police officers dead, said Zia Durani, a spokesperson for Kandahar police headquarter.

The spokesman for the Kandahar police, on 5 May said that the militants struck late on May 4 or early on May 5 at the home of General Abdul Raziq, who was not at home.
The spokesman said a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-filled vehicle at the first checkpoint of the compound, killing two police officers.
Two militants on foot then followed the first assailant by attacking the second checkpoint, Durani added.
There were no claims of responsibility, although local police pointed to the Taliban militant group.
General Abdul Raziq, is one of the powerful police chiefs in the southern part of Afghanistan. He is famous for being “determined” in the fight against the Taliban insurgents.

According to reports, Kandahar police chief has been targeted ten times. The latest assassination attempt took place at the Kandahar governor’s guesthouse, where UAE ambassador was killed and five diplomats of that country, including Kandahar governor, were wounded.

Two weeks ago, Kandahar border police commander was killed in an explosion. The Taliban group claimed responsibility.
Kandahar is traditionally one of the main bases of Taliban group. However, the security situation of the province has recently improved.

Yet, the attack on Kandahar police chief takes place while his relations with the presidential palace have been darkened. Meanwhile, there reports that the central government has prepared his removal verdict.
