U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Wednesday to discuss ways of resuming peace talks, Afghan government officials said.
“The U.S. and Afghan presidents agreed on the resumption of peace negotiations but with close participation and coordination with the Afghan government,” a senior Afghan official said. According to Reuters.
“Our precondition is a reduction of violence leading to a ceasefire, and that is what U.S. want too,” the official added.
Meanwhile, source among Taliban told Reuters that it will not announce any ceasefire before a deal with America.
“We will not announce any ceasefire before a deal with the U.S., and secondly we will not agree to hold any meetings with the Afghan government before that,” said a Taliban source.
Khalilzad’s trip to Afghanistan comes after surprised visit of US President Donald Trump from the country last week.
