President Ghani received US envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad as US-Taliban inching towards an agreement that would end America’s longest war.
“Mr. Khalilzad briefed the President on his latest visits to Doha and Islamabad related to peace efforts,” said Seddiq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the presidential palace (Arg).
The main focus of the president’s talks with Khalilzad was on how to secure a ceasefire and to address Taliban safe havens outside Afghanistan.
During the meeting, President Ghani expressed his concerns about the continuation of violence from the Taliban group.
The President reiterated that the Afghan people and government want a sustainable peace and has no doubt about it.
“Both sides hoped for a ceasefire to ensure peace in Afghanistan,” Seddiqi added.
US envoy Khalilzad had traveled to Doha and Islamabad after the peace talks paused in Doha for further consultations.
