US special envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad in a trip to Doha, discusses investment opportunities and the peace process with officials of Qatari fund for development and the Taliban delegation.
On investment opportunities, Khalilzad twitted that he discussed the possibility of co-investing in Afghan projects to consolidate peace and unlock regional prosperity.
“The potential to amplify investment impact in Afghanistan with like-minded partners is real,” he said.
During the meeting with Taliban delegation, he underscored the economic development opportunities that will follow a sustainable peace.
“We agreed developing plans in support of peace can never start too early, assuming the 2 sides can overcome final hurdles on the path to intra-Afghan negotiations,” Khalilzad said after meeting Taliban delegation.
According to him, Taliban recognize all Afghans will have to make compromises in order to draw in the requirement in Afghanistan’s future.
Earlier this week, US envoy and his delegation held a video call with president Ashraf Ghani and the head of high council of national reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah to share their view on economic opportunities, investment, and issues pertaining to the peace process.
They emphasized the immediate step to rapidly resolve the remaining issues surrounding the start of intra-Afghan negotiations as delay provides opportunities for spoilers.
