Hundreds of Sunni and Shia Sadat elders gathered at Esteghlal Hotel in western Herat province on Thursday and called on the government to register Sadat ethnicity at the new electronic Identity cards (Tazkiras).
Sadat people in Herat warned that as long as our identity was not registered at the new EIC, we would not get this Tazkira.
“The issue of inserting our identity in E-ID cards was clarified and there is no need for explanation,” said Sayed Azim Kabarzani, the former provincial council member, who attended the gathering.
According to him, the constitution has given the right to every ethnic group to be recognized by their identity.
Kabarzani emphasized that “we will not take Tazkira if Sadat ethnicity is not inserted in the new e-ID cards”.
He pointed out that Sadat ethnic group came from Arabia to promote Islam religion in various parts of the world, including Afghanistan.
“No ethnic group is superior to other and this is our right to be recognized by our own identity,” Mr Kabarzani concluded.
He warned the government that “it should mention Sadat ethnicity along with other ethnic groups or not to mention any ethnic group in new ID cards. The government should not put itself against a nation by not inserting the identity of an ethnic group.
This comes as Sadat ethnic group has previously protested in many other provinces of the country, calling on the government to insert Sadat ethnicity in new e-ID cards.
However, the process of distributing e-ID cards has been stopped due to disagreements.
