The president of Afghanistan central bank Khalil Sediq said in a session answering the House of Representatives on Monday 16 July that the main reason behind the rise of the dollar in the market, is smuggling to neighboring countries.
“currency is being smuggled from official borders of the country in five places; Islam Qala, Hairatan, Kabul and Mazar airfields as well as Nimroz and Farah provinces,” said Khalil Sediq, the president of the central bank.
The head of the central bank further said that taxies commuting between Herat and Mashhad, are smuggling a large amount of money to Iran every day.
According to Mr Sediq, some smugglers have a passport with Multiple visas which they can smuggle as much money as possible to Iran.
The president of the central bank also accused local powers of smuggling currency abroad.
“if smuggling foreign currency being prevented, the value of the Afghani currency will increase again,” Mr Sediq emphasized.
The value of the Afghani currency has fallen dramatically over the past few months.
It is noteworthy that the drop in Afghani currency against the dollar has accelerated food prices in the country.
