Afghanistan chamber of commerce and industry, in response to president M. Ashraf Ghani’s recent remarks, said that there is a long way ahead for changing Afghanistan into an economic crossroads in the region.

The existence of highways, the connection of routes through the railways, the installation of large scanners in ports, the connection of ports through modern technology and security in the region, are the basic needs of the country in order to become the economic crossroads of the region, the officials of chamber of commerce and industry said.

According to them, initial steps have been taken but these requirements have not yet been met by the government.
“Currently, Afghanistan’s transit issues have only been resolved but it has not yet been converted to an economic crossroads in the region,” Khanjan Alokozay, the deputy to the chamber of commerce and industry told reporters on Friday.
“Afghanistan may become such a crossroad if barriers on the way to exporting goods to other countries would be removed,” he added.

However, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, in a ceremony celebrating Nawruz in Mazar-e-Sharif city, said that Afghanistan is becoming an economic crossroads of the regional countries by the opening of air corridors, the inauguration of the Chabahar port and the Lapis Lazuli road.
“The government is trying to make Afghanistan an exporting country from an importing one,” Mr Ghani added.
