The Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision regarding the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and reiterated Pakistan’s desire for peace in the region, according to Pakistan Today.
Talking to journalists, the foreign minister said the decision [of US troops withdrawal] will help further the ongoing peace talks being held in UAE between the Afghan Taliban and the US.
Qureshi said Pakistan has also released some [Taliban] prisoners so that “an enabling environment” conducive to the talks can be created.
He asserted that Pakistan will continue to play whatever role it can play to support the Afghan peace process.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump decided to pull about 7,000 troops from Afghanistan, according to a US official.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said that Pakistan supports Afghan-led and Afghan-owned plan to help bring lasting peace in Afghanistan, according to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
COAS Bajwa said that wars bring death, destruction and misery for the people.
The top Pakistani officials say these while Abu Dhabi talks was held without Kabul delegation.
