2 Dead and Dozens Sick; Humanitarian Crisis at the Afghanistan-Pakistan Border

DIDPress: Local sources report a humanitarian crisis at the Chaman-Spīn Bōldak border crossing.

Following an intense heatwave and severe overcrowding at the Chaman-Spīn Bōldak border, two travelers have died, and numerous women and children have fallen ill due to deteriorating health conditions.

Following an agreement between the interim government of Afghanistan and Pakistani authorities, the “Mazal” crossing is temporarily opened daily for the passage of patients, children, women, and stranded individuals. However, this reopening was delayed by 14 hours and took place at midnight on Thursday. Only those holding valid Afghan ID cards and Pakistan visas were allowed to cross.

Unprecedented congestion and lack of organization have caused confusion and the disappearance of some children and women. Only individuals holding special cards issued by the interim Afghan government or Pakistani authorities can cross the border easily.

Civil society activists and local residents have expressed concern about the ongoing situation and have called for the urgent intervention of humanitarian organizations to provide security, order, and emergency assistance in the border area.
