EU Emphasizes Appointment of UN Special Envoy on Afghanistan

DIDPress: Criticizing the human rights situation in Afghanistan—particularly women rights—the EU demanded the appointment of a UN Special Envoy for Afghanistan at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Referring to the approval of “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law in 2024, Stavros Lambrinidis, the EU representative to the UN, said: “This law is yet another attack on the rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls.”

“We categorically condemn the deprivation of women from education, freedom of movement, expression, and work. The Taliban must revoke all restrictive laws and adhere to Afghanistan’s international obligations,” he underlined.

Despite these strong remarks, the EU representative added that “we support Doha process and call for the appointment of a UN Special Envoy for Afghanistan.”

While the EU announced the allocation of €1.8 billion in humanitarian aid, it remained silent on political engagement or the formal recognition of the Taliban.
