Poll: Afghanistan Population Worried by Lack of Constitution

DID Press: A new poll by DID Press reveals the majority of Afghanistan people considers the lack of a constitution a major threat to the country’s stability. According to the findings, 57% of respondents believe this absence is the primary driver of political and social unrest, underscoring the importance they place on legal frameworks for maintaining order, distributing power, and preventing crises.

Another 29% expressed concern that without a constitution, power has become fully concentrated in the hands of a single individual. Analysts note that such worries are rooted in historical examples where the absence of clear legal safeguards paved the way for authoritarianism and the dismantling of oversight bodies.

Meanwhile, 14% of participants saw the situation as an opportunity for the unrestricted implementation of Sharia law, arguing that without constitutional constraints, religious rulings can be applied directly. This view, however, remains among the minority.

Notably, none of the respondents chose the option “It makes no difference,” suggesting that the question of whether or not the country has a constitution is widely regarded as pivotal to its future.

The poll results point to a clear divide in public opinion: a majority viewing the lack of a constitution as a destabilizing force, and a smaller group seeing it as a chance to advance religious governance. This division reflects a deeper tension between modern, law-based governance and traditional religious approaches
