Taliban Government Renews Bid for Afghanistan’s UN Seat

DID Press: Suhail Shaheen, Taliban caretaker government’s representative in Qatar, has once again called for Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations to be handed over to the group, criticizing its continued exclusion from the world body.

With the 80th UN General Assembly approaching, Shaheen urged both the Credentials Committee and the General Assembly to recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s official representative.

Over the past four years, the UN has repeatedly rejected the Taliban’s requests, citing concerns over human rights, restrictions on women, and the absence of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

The UN Credentials Committee, composed of nine member states, has consistently deferred consideration of the Taliban’s claim. The conditions for reassessment include formation of an inclusive government, human rights guarantees, and an end of support from terrorist groups—requirements the Taliban caretaker government have so far declined to meet.

As the 80th General Assembly will convene, Afghanistan remains without an officially recognized representative at the UN.
