Afghanistan Granted Observer Status in Shanghai Cooperation Organization

DID Press: Following the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting, a majority of member states have approved Afghanistan’s application for observer status, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s regional ties.

In a statement, Afghanistan’s embassy in Russia said that during recent diplomatic meetings, both sides emphasized the need to expand bilateral relations and discussed matters related to the SCO summit.

The statement confirmed that most SCO members have agreed to Afghanistan’s observer status, allowing the country to participate officially in future meetings of the regional organization.

Afghanistan’s representative, Gul Hasan, described the observer membership as a vital step for enhancing the country’s political and economic engagement in the region.

The SCO is a major regional institution focusing on politics, security, and economics, with powerful Asian countries including China, Russia, India, and Iran among its members.

Afghanistan’s observer status is expected to open new avenues for participation in regional developments.
