Shahbaz Sharif at UN: Taliban Must Respect Human Rights, Women’s Freedom

DID Press: Pakistan’s PM, Shahbaz Sharif, called on the Taliban to respect human rights and women’s freedoms and to ensure Afghanistan soil is not used for attacks against other countries.

Addressing the UNGA in New York, Sharif urged Taliban’s caretaker government to prioritize respect for human rights and protection of fundamental freedoms.

Expressing concern over the current situation in Afghanistan, he said Taliban have so far failed to take meaningful steps toward safeguarding the rights of women and minorities.

He called on the group to fulfill its commitments regarding civil liberties and to recognize the rights of Afghanistan women.

Sharif also emphasized the need for regional cooperation to combat terrorism and maintain lasting security, adding that Pakistan is ready to work with neighboring countries and the international community to address security challenges in Afghanistan.
