UN Urges Immediate Global Action to Save Historic Jam Minaret
DID Press: UN warned of the risk of collapse of the historic Jam Minaret in Ghor province and called on the international community to urgently cooperate with UNESCO to protect this valuable monument of Islamic civilization.

Indrika Ratwatte, UN Humanitarian Coordinator, during her visit to Ghor, appealed for immediate international support to UNESCO to prevent further deterioration of the monument.
According to Ratwatte, last year’s floods damaged the base of the minaret and eroded much of the surrounding area.
She warned that without prompt action, the likelihood of the minaret’s collapse will increase.
The UN official emphasized that the Jam Minaret requires protective walls, base reinforcement, and extensive scientific studies to assess the level of erosion and structural stability.
“This minaret is part of the heritage of Islamic civilization and the Afghan people, and preserving it requires global attention and financial resources,” Ratwatte said.
The UN reported that UNESCO has already installed equipment inside the tower to monitor its balance and structural integrity.
Built in the late 12th century with brickwork adorned with Quranic inscriptions, the Jam Minaret—one of the architectural masterpieces of the Ghorid era—was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2002.
