Atmar: Political Alignment Offers ‘Historic Opportunity’ for Peace in Afghanistan

DID Press: Former Afghan FM Hanif Atmar has hailed the recent agreement among three major political factions in Afghanistan, describing it as “a significant step during this sensitive period in the country’s history.” He said the alignment marks the beginning of a national process aimed at achieving lasting peace and establishing a legitimate, accountable political system.

Atmar emphasized that these factions have prioritized dialogue and peaceful solutions over all other options, urging the Taliban not to “miss this historic opportunity.” He said lasting peace is achievable only if a legitimate system, rooted in the will of the people, is formed, and that the Taliban must respect citizens’ rights and freedoms as they engage in a national dialogue.

He also called on regional countries, the international community, and the United Nations to support and facilitate intra-Afghan talks, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2721 and independent UN assessments.

According to Atmar, the agreement between the High Council of Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan, the National Resistance Front, the National Assembly for the Salvation of Afghanistan, and the National Movement for Peace and Justice “lays the groundwork for national cooperation.” He stressed that the initiative is not a formal political coalition, but a broad effort at national coordination and convergence aimed at achieving peace and a legitimate, accountable system.
