Guterres: Iraqis Overcome Decades of War and Repression

DID Press: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during a visit to Iraq, said that the country’s progress toward lasting peace and stability demonstrates the valuable role of the UN in supporting post-conflict recovery.

“Iraqis have managed to overcome decades of repression, war, terrorism, sectarianism, and foreign interference. Iraq today is a different country—more peaceful, more secure, and determined to continue on the path of development,” said Guterres, praising the Iraqi people.

Speaking in Baghdad, he “congratulated the Iraqi people for their courage, resilience, and determination.”

Highlighting the UN’s long-standing engagement, Guterres noted: “For 22 years, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has contributed to strengthening peace and stability by promoting dialogue and national reconciliation, supporting reforms, advancing human rights, assisting the return of displaced persons, and supporting electoral processes. These achievements underscore the value of the United Nations’ role in helping countries build sustainable peace.”
