Somalia Urges Emergency Arab League Meeting Over Israel’s Somaliland Recognition

DID Press: Somalia has condemned Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland as an independent state and has formally requested the Arab League to hold an emergency session to assess the implications and defend Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ali Abdi Awari, Somalia’s ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League, strongly denounced Israel’s decision and urged immediate intervention by the League to counter the action.

He confirmed that Somalia has officially submitted a request for an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council to review the consequences of what he described as a “dangerous” decision threatening the nation’s unity and sovereignty.

The Somali representative emphasized that Israel’s statements and actions constitute a blatant violation of the Federal Republic of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, conflicting with international law, the UN Charter, and the resolutions of both the Arab League and the African Union, all of which stress respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs.

He also underscored that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia’s territory, and any attempt to recognize it as an independent entity is “null and legally void.”
