UN: $2.5B Spent on Afghan Refugee Assistance in 2025

DID Press: UN has announced that its agencies spent USD 2.5 billion in 2025 to support Afghan refugees and returnees.

The funds were provided at a time when the large-scale return of refugees has intensified economic and social pressures inside the country.Indrika Ratwatte, Deputy Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), told Abdul Kabir, the Taliban administration’s minister for refugees and repatriation, that returns from neighboring states have increased Afghanistan’s population by roughly 10 percent in a short period.

He added that the situation requires stronger coordination between domestic institutions and international organizations.According to UNAMA, UN assistance has included food support, shelter, health services, and other humanitarian aid for returnees and vulnerable households.Ratwatte stressed that the UN is working to prevent Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis from deepening.

Meanwhile, the Taliban Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said the UN has proposed measures to facilitate the movement of humanitarian supplies across border crossings, especially routes linked to Pakistan.

Coordination to identify the needs of returnees is expected to continue next year.Abdul Kabir thanked the United Nations for its assistance, called for expanded humanitarian support, and said emergency plans are being prepared to help returnees during the winter season.
