Tehran-Kabul Hold New Talks on Hamoun Water Rights

DID Press: Iran’s Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment announced positive talks with Afghan officials regarding the provision of water rights for the Hamoun wetlands.

Shina Ansari, Iran’s Vice President and head of the Department of Environment, noted that the survival of the Hamoun wetlands depends heavily on seasonal floodwaters. She said the focus of the negotiations is to ensure that runoff waters are directed toward Iran and the Hamoun wetlands instead of being diverted to the Godzareh salt flats.

She added that agreements have been reached with the Afghan side in this regard and expressed hope that the process will continue in a practical and sustainable manner.

Ansari also emphasized that occasional flood inflows are not sufficient, stressing that the issue must be pursued within a legal and structured framework to ensure the continuous provision of the allocated water share for Hamoun.
