Khalilzad Warns Internal Injustice Weakens Pakistan’s Diplomatic Credibility

DID Press: Former US envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has warned that Pakistan’s domestic political conditions could undermine its regional diplomatic efforts.

Reacting to recent developments and Islamabad’s mediation role in regional tensions, Khalilzad said Pakistan’s initiatives are notable, but internal challenges may significantly weaken their effectiveness.

In a social media post, he referred to Pakistan’s diplomatic activity aimed at reducing tensions between the United States, Iran, and Israel, while stressing that ignoring internal political conditions—particularly the treatment of opposition figures—could undermine these efforts.

He specifically described the handling of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his family, and supporters as “unjust and concerning,” calling for stronger adherence to rule of law and political fairness.

Khalilzad emphasized that sustainable stability requires equal political rights and a fair competitive environment for all political forces. He further warned that continued restrictions on opposition voices could deepen domestic mistrust and weaken Pakistan’s international credibility.

He concluded that as Pakistan seeks a more active role in regional crisis management, its internal governance—particularly in political rights—will play a decisive role in shaping its diplomatic success or failure.
