Taliban: Perpetrators of Herat Shia Attack Will Be Punished

DID Press: Authorities in Taliban have announced the arrest of those responsible for a deadly attack targeting members of the Shia community in the Deh Miry area of Enjil District, saying the suspects will be punished soon.

Nur Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban governor of Herat, described the attack as “inhuman and contrary to Islamic principles” during a funeral ceremony for the victims.

The attack occurred on 21 April when local residents had gathered near a shrine associated with the Shiite community in the Deh Miry area, located between Enjil and Zinda Jan districts. Armed attackers opened fire on the crowd, killing and injuring several people.

Local sources initially reported 11 fatalities, later updated to 12 after one injured victim—identified as Najibullah Habibi—died in an Iranian hospital due to severe wounds.

While Taliban officials have confirmed the arrest of suspects, no detailed information has been released regarding their identities, number, or the progress of the investigation. Authorities had earlier stated that a suspect was detained at the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Residents say the incident has caused widespread fear in the area and are calling for stronger security measures.
