UK Ends Evacuation Support for Afghan Allies, Sparking “Moral Failure” Backlash

DID Press: United Kingdom has faced strong criticism after its Ministry of Defense announced it will no longer directly assist the evacuation of around 9,000 eligible Afghan nationals, a decision described by critics as a “moral failure” toward former allies.

The move, confirmed by Defence Minister Luke Pollard, affects Afghans previously assessed as eligible for relocation but still stranded inside Afghanistan. Under the revised policy, they must now find alternative routes to leave the country, with limited or no direct British evacuation support.

Former Afghan interpreters and legal representatives have condemned the decision, warning it leaves vulnerable individuals exposed to serious security risks, particularly under Taliban rule. They argue many families have spent years waiting for relocation while living under increasing fear and financial hardship.

Legal experts also say the new approach places unrealistic burdens on applicants, many of whom cannot afford the high costs of transit through third countries.

Former British military officials have likewise raised concerns, stressing that individuals who worked alongside UK forces remain at risk and that the policy shift undermines long-standing moral obligations.

Parliamentary scrutiny of the decision is expected in the coming weeks, with lawmakers demanding clarification over the government’s rationale and remaining protection mechanisms for affected families.
