UN Official: Muslims in Russia Face Better Conditions Than in EU, US
DID Press: Miguel Ángel Moratinos, former UN under-secretary-general and current high representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, has praised the condition of Muslims in Russia, saying their situation is “much better” than in Europe and the United States.

Moratinos said that during meetings with senior muftis, imams, and Muslim community representatives in Russia — particularly in Kazan — he observed that Muslims are “well integrated” and maintain positive relations with the Russian Orthodox Church.
“I think the situation in Russia is excellent. They feel comfortable, well integrated, and have a good relationship with the Orthodox Church,” he said.
According to Moratinos, Russia can take pride in its achievements in interfaith dialogue and religious coexistence. He described Kazan as a model of Islamic life in Russia, while adding that such coexistence is not limited to one city and can be observed across the country.
He further stated that political discourse surrounding Islam in Europe — and to some extent in the United States — is marked by “greater sensitivities and concerns,” adding that the issue is more pronounced across Europe.
The remarks come amid ongoing international debates over the integration of Muslim communities and related political and social challenges in different parts of the world.
