Taliban Defense Minister Arrives in Moscow for International Security Conference

DID Press: Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid has arrived in Moscow at the invitation of the Russian Federation to participate in an international security conference focused on regional threats and security cooperation.

The conference brings together senior military, security, and political officials from regional and global powers to discuss security challenges emerging from Afghanistan and the future of regional coordination.

The meeting comes amid growing concerns expressed by Russia and Central Asian states over the activities of armed groups inside Afghanistan.

Sergei Shoigu recently stated that an estimated 18,000 to 23,000 fighters linked to more than 20 armed groups are currently active in Afghanistan, describing them as a direct threat to regional stability.

According to reports, the Taliban delegation led by Yaqoob Mujahid is expected to present its views on regional security developments, joint cooperation, and Afghanistan’s role in maintaining stability.

The Moscow International Security Conference is considered one of the major annual forums for defense and security cooperation among regional and international actors.

Analysts view Yaqoob Mujahid’s visit as part of the Taliban’s broader effort to reduce political isolation and gain international legitimacy. However, these diplomatic moves continue to face skepticism amid persistent regional concerns over militant groups and ISIS affiliates operating in Afghanistan.

Observers note that while regional powers increasingly engage with the Taliban for pragmatic security reasons, such meetings remain largely symbolic unless accompanied by measurable action on counterterrorism, human rights, and inclusive governance.
