NYT: Trump and Vance Diverge Over Iran as Succession Questions Grow

DID Press: A report by The New York Times says Donald Trump has privately expressed doubts about whether J.D. Vance can lead the Republican movement after Trump’s political era, highlighting growing questions about the party’s future leadership.

According to the report, Trump has repeatedly asked advisers and allies whether Vance possesses the political skills necessary to reach the highest office and emerge as the future leader of the Republican Party. The newspaper said Trump himself often appears uncertain about the answer.

Despite those reservations, Trump continues to involve Vance in major policy decisions, assign him high-profile political responsibilities, and rely on him to advance key Republican priorities. During a recent cabinet meeting, Trump reportedly compared Vance to famed federal agent Eliot Ness and praised his role in pursuing corruption cases.

The report also states that Trump frequently contrasts Vance’s political achievements with his own, noting that Vance won a difficult U.S. Senate race in Ohio with Trump’s endorsement and support.

At the same time, Trump has privately criticized some of Vance’s positions, including his initial opposition to military action against Iran. The report further claims Trump was dissatisfied with the outcome of diplomatic efforts led by Vance regarding talks in Pakistan aimed at reducing regional tensions.

Political observers believe Trump’s repeated comparisons between Vance and Marco Rubio have become one of the clearest signs of an emerging competition over the future leadership of the Republican Party and the 2028 presidential race.
