Taliban Welcomes China’s Expanded Role in UN Afghanistan File

DID Press: Taliban administration has welcomed China’s expanded role in managing Afghanistan-related discussions and draft resolutions at the United Nations, describing it as an opportunity for a more balanced assessment of the country’s situation.

Zabihullah Mujahid said the transfer of responsibility for the Afghanistan file at the UN to China could mark a new phase in how Afghanistan-related issues are addressed internationally.

He stated that China has a more “realistic understanding” of regional conditions and, due to its engagement with the Taliban authorities, could play a more effective role in facilitating dialogue.

According to Mujahid, the shift may help ensure a more impartial evaluation of Afghanistan’s challenges and opportunities within the United Nations framework.

Reports indicate that United Nations responsibility for Afghanistan was handled by Japan in 2024 and transferred to China in 2025, amid ongoing international focus on Afghanistan’s political and humanitarian situation.
