DID Press: A new analytical note by Maleeha Lodhi, former ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, examines the decision-making style of Donald Trump and its implications for U.S. foreign policy.

Lodhi argues that Trump tends to launch ambitious geopolitical initiatives with significant publicity, but often abandons them when confronted with complexity or shifting political priorities. According to her analysis, this pattern has affected the credibility and consistency of Washington’s global commitments.
The first example highlighted is the Gaza peace initiative, a 20-point plan that was presented as a framework for reconstruction and economic transformation of the enclave. The author notes that despite initial momentum, the plan has gradually lost political attention, while the ceasefire remains fragile and reconstruction efforts face funding and legal challenges.
The second case concerns the war in Ukraine, where Trump had previously claimed that the conflict could be resolved quickly. However, ongoing diplomatic efforts, multilateral talks, and direct negotiations have not produced a durable settlement, with repeated pauses and shifts in U.S. policy direction.
The analysis concludes that such a governance pattern may weaken trust among allies, embolden strategic rivals, and erode the United States’ global standing. It also warns that in the context of ongoing regional tensions—including Iran-related developments—policy inconsistency could carry additional strategic costs for Washington.
