Russia Calls for End to Western Dominance in UN Leadership Structure

DID Press: Senior Russian Foreign Ministry official Kirill Logvinov has said that the next UN Secretary-General must correct what Moscow describes as “bias” in the current system and reduce Western influence within the United Nations Secretariat.

Logvinov, head of international organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that perceived partiality among UN officials has weakened the organization’s ability to mediate global crises effectively.

He argued that declining trust in UN institutions stems from what he described as politicized behavior by some officials, undermining the credibility essential for international mediation.

According to him, the next UN chief should address what he called an “overrepresentation of Western nationals” in senior Secretariat positions.

Logvinov highlighted that several key UN posts are currently held by officials from Western countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, and said this imbalance affects decision-making processes and global representation.

He added that this concern is not limited to Russia, but is also shared by a number of countries in the Global South, which have long called for greater geographic balance within UN institutions.

The remarks come ahead of discussions surrounding future leadership transitions at the United Nations, where debates over reform and representation remain a recurring issue.
