UN: Death Toll from Nuristan Floods Surpasses 40, Searches Underway

DID Press: The UN says the death toll from the recent flash floods in Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province has risen to more than 40, with an unknown number of people still missing as search and relief operations continue.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said floods damaged homes, public buildings, and commercial facilities. He noted that UN humanitarian agencies and their partners are assessing the full scale of the disaster.

According to Dujarric, mobile health teams have been deployed to affected areas, medical facilities have been placed on high alert, and emergency supplies—including food, medical equipment, and other essential relief items—have been mobilized for survivors.

The most urgent needs of those affected include emergency shelter, food assistance, healthcare services, essential household items, and psychosocial support, said the UN.

The UN figures differ from those released by the Taliban authorities on the previous day, which reported 23 fatalities while more than 100 people remained missing following the floods.
