Deadly Floods in India’s Assam Kill 50, Displace 700,000

DID Press: Torrential monsoon rains and the overflowing Brahmaputra River have triggered devastating floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam, killing at least 50 people and forcing around 700,000 residents to flee their homes.

According to local authorities and the Associated Press, floodwaters have submerged nearly 900 villages across the state, leaving widespread destruction and disrupting essential services.

Officials said more than 7,000 homes have lost electricity, while hundreds of thousands of displaced residents have been relocated to temporary relief camps.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said emergency teams are continuing rescue operations, evacuating stranded residents and distributing food and other essential aid to affected communities.
