WFP Warns of Deeper Aid Cuts in Gaza Amid Critical Funding Shortfall

DID Press: The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that worsening funding shortages are forcing it to reduce food and cash assistance in Gaza, cautioning that significantly deeper cuts will begin in October unless urgent financial support is secured.

The UN agency said it currently provides monthly assistance to around 1.5 million people in Gaza—more than 70 percent of the territory’s population—through food parcels, flour, bread, hot meals, and cash assistance.

According to the WFP, the collapse of livelihoods and an unemployment rate exceeding 80 percent have left most families unable to meet their basic needs without humanitarian aid.

The agency said it requires more than $420 million to sustain its operations in Gaza and the West Bank through the end of the year.

Funding shortfalls have already forced the WFP to reduce cash assistance for 75,000 people by 25 percent, while food rations for approximately 220,000 families have been cut in half.

The WFP warned that, without new funding, much steeper reductions in humanitarian assistance will take effect starting in October.

According to a UN assessment, around 1.4 million people, representing 67 percent of Gaza’s population, continue to face crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity.
