DID Press: US Congress has launched a new inquiry into FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s relationship with President Donald Trump, amid scrutiny over alleged political influence on decisions within world football’s governing body.
According to the report, Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has sent a formal letter requesting that Infantino provide documents detailing FIFA’s communications, coordination, and cooperation with Trump and his team. The letter also calls on the FIFA president to testify before Congress.
The congressional inquiry reportedly centers on two controversial issues. The first involves the alleged lifting of a suspension imposed on Folarin Balogun following a telephone call between Trump and FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The second concerns the creation of a FIFA Peace Award, which was reportedly established without approval from FIFA’s governing board and presented to Trump in 2025.
While Democrats currently lack the congressional majority needed to compel testimony, lawmakers say the investigation could expand if the balance of power changes after the next midterm elections, potentially leading to a formal subpoena for Infantino.
FIFA has not publicly responded to the congressional requests, and its silence has intensified questions over the nature of Infantino’s relationship with the U.S. administration.
