Taliban Approves 5-Year Development Strategy for Afghanistan

DID Press: Taliban says it has approved a five-year national development strategy aimed at attracting foreign investment, expanding domestic industries, strengthening agriculture and creating jobs as part of its long-term economic agenda.

Zabihullah Mujahid announced during the second edition of the Government in the Mirror of the Press forum that Afghanistan’s Ministry of Economy had prepared the five-year development strategy during the 1447 Hijri lunar year. He said the document was reviewed and approved by the Taliban leadership’s Economic Commission before receiving final endorsement.

According to Mujahid, the strategy includes measures to facilitate foreign direct investment, promote the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, expand domestic tourism, strengthen sustainable agriculture, establish industrial zones, support local manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports and generate employment opportunities.

He said the initiatives form part of the Taliban administration’s broader economic agenda to promote sustainable growth, strengthen the private sector and expand Afghanistan’s domestic productive capacity.

The Taliban has not released full details of the strategy, including implementation timelines, funding mechanisms or measurable economic targets. International organizations continue to note that Afghanistan faces significant economic challenges, including limited international recognition, sanctions-related constraints and reduced external development assistance.
