Ancient Greco-Bactrian Coin Unearthed in Northern Afghanistan

DID Press: A coin believed to be around 2,000 years old has been discovered in Afghanistan’s northern Baghlan province and transferred to a local museum after completing legal procedures, according to Taliban cultural authorities. Preliminary assessments suggest the artifact dates to the Greco-Bactrian period.

Asadullah Mostafa Hashemi said the ancient coin was found by a young boy while grazing sheep in Burka District.

According to Hashemi, the coin was officially handed over to the local museum operated by the Directorate of Information and Culture of Baghlan after the completion of legal procedures.

Initial examinations indicate that the artifact belongs to the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, a Hellenistic civilization that flourished across parts of present-day Afghanistan and Central Asia. Officials said further archaeological and numismatic analysis will be conducted to determine the coin’s exact age, origin and historical significance.

The coin is currently being preserved at the Baghlan provincial museum pending additional expert evaluation.
