Afghanistan Deploys 47,000 GPS Trackers to Enforce Highway Speed Limits

DID Press: Afghanistan’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation says it has installed 47,000 GPS tracking devices on vehicles as part of a nationwide initiative to monitor speeds and reduce traffic accidents on the country’s highways.

During a visit to Herat Province, ministry officials announced progress in the GPS installation program for vehicles.

According to Mawlawi Hafizullah Halimi, head of the ministry’s Technical Services Department, 47,000 GPS devices have been installed so far, and cooperation agreements have been signed with 22 GPS service providers to implement the project.

Under the system, the maximum permitted speed on highways has been set at 105 km/h for passenger vehicles and 70 km/h for freight vehicles.

Halimi said the ministry’s technical teams continuously monitor the system and contact transport companies and drivers whenever excessive speeds are detected, issuing warnings to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
