UNSC to Review Five Years of Taliban Rule in Afghanistan

DID Press: United Nations Security Council will examine the impact of five years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan this August, coinciding with the anniversary of the group’s return to power, Denmark’s UN envoy and current Security Council president has said.

Christina Markus Lassen, Denmark’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said the Council will focus on the consequences of Taliban rule for the Afghan population, particularly women and girls.

She described the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover as a “bitter milestone” and said the Security Council presidency is seeking to highlight the broader humanitarian, social and human rights implications of the political transition.

The discussion comes as Afghanistan continues to face international concerns over restrictions on women’s rights, access to education, humanitarian conditions and governance under the Taliban authorities.
