UN: No Process Underway to Transfer Afghanistan’s Seat to Taliban

DID Press: United Nations has said that no process is currently underway to transfer Afghanistan’s seat at the organization to the Taliban administration, stressing that any decision on recognition and representation rests with member states.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said that the recognition of governments and the allocation of seats at the United Nations are matters decided by member states, and that the UN Secretariat does not make independent decisions on such issues.

Haq stated that, so far, no UN member state has recognized the Taliban administration as the official representative of Afghanistan at the UN General Assembly.

He added that there is currently no formal initiative or process among UN members to change the status of Afghanistan’s seat and hand it over to the Taliban.

The UN spokesperson also said that the newly appointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan has not yet officially started work, without providing further details about the beginning of the mission or its future plans.
