Pakistan Summons US Diplomat Over Ambassador’s Kashmir Remarks

DID Press: Pakistan summoned the chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday and lodged a strong protest over remarks by U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who described Kashmir as an “important part of India.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the U.S. diplomat was called to the ministry and formally informed of Islamabad’s “strong protest” over Gor’s comments concerning the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Islamabad rejected the remarks, reiterating that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally disputed territory whose final status should be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry described the ambassador’s comments as “irresponsible” and said they contradicted what Islamabad characterized as the United States’ longstanding and documented position on the Kashmir dispute.

Gor made the remarks on Wednesday during his first visit to Indian-administered Kashmir, describing the territory as an “important part of India,” triggering a sharp response from Islamabad.

At the same time, Pakistan welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to mediate between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir dispute. Islamabad urged Washington to ensure that public statements by its officials remain consistent with the disputed status of the region.

Kashmir has remained one of the main sources of tension between India and Pakistan for decades. Both countries claim the entire territory but control separate parts of it.
