DID Press: The Atlantic reports that US President Donald Trump has failed to achieve his objectives in the trade dispute with Canada, with Washington’s tariffs, pressure and threats against Ottawa producing limited results.
The magazine said that despite Canada’s economy being significantly smaller than that of the United States, the Canadian government has adopted a more measured approach and managed to defend its national interests against Washington’s trade pressure.
According to the report, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney enjoys higher public approval than Trump, while Canadians have become broadly united in their distrust of Washington. The United States, meanwhile, is facing rising national debt, high interest rates and an energy crisis, the magazine said.
The Atlantic also argued that Trump’s failure to recognize that power alone does not determine the outcome of conflicts, and that “resilience” also matters, has contributed to what it described as his failure in the war with Iran and his difficulties in trade disputes.
Earlier, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the Canadian government had rejected an agreement that Washington considered mutually beneficial. Meanwhile, a 50% US tariff on certain Canadian goods took effect on Saturday.
