Taliban Seeks to Harness Afghanistan’s Solar, Wind and Hydropower Potential

DID Press: Abdul Latif Nazari, the Taliban’s deputy economy minister, has called for comprehensive research and planning to develop Afghanistan’s solar, wind and hydropower resources, describing renewable energy as an important area for strengthening the country’s infrastructure.

Nazari said Afghanistan has significant renewable-energy potential and that developing these resources could contribute to strengthening the country’s energy sector and broader economic infrastructure.

He also attributed damage and deterioration to parts of Afghanistan’s infrastructure to years of foreign intervention, saying some infrastructure had been weakened or destroyed.

Nazari called for comprehensive studies to identify the country’s renewable-energy resources and determine how they could be developed more effectively. He said Afghanistan has substantial potential in solar, wind and hydropower.

The emphasis on renewable energy comes as Afghanistan seeks to expand domestic electricity generation and reduce its reliance on imported power. Recent reporting indicates that solar projects are being developed in several parts of the country, while authorities have also promoted hydropower and wind projects.
