Historic Khwaja Abdullah Ansari Grand Mosque in Herat Restored

DID Press: The restoration and reconstruction of the Grand Khwaja Abdullah Ansari Mosque in Gazargah, Herat province, has been completed at a cost of 107 million Afghanis, with the mosque now reopened after two years of construction.

The mosque, a well-known religious site in Gazargah, was reportedly completely destroyed before being rebuilt in accordance with technical standards. The new two-story structure has a total floor area of 3,000 square meters and can accommodate around 10,000 worshippers.

The project also includes a standard ablution facility, landscaped areas, a library and parking facilities for visitors and worshippers.

Funding for the reconstruction was provided by private donors, with construction continuing over the past two years.

Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, attended the reopening ceremony and described the reconstruction as an important step toward preserving the role of mosques and providing residents with an appropriate place for worship.

The Gazargah Sharif religious complex is among Herat’s best-known religious sites and attracts large numbers of worshippers and visitors from across the province each year.
