Trump’s latest remark comes amid a series of unusual statements and actions involving geographic names and U.S. territorial symbolism. In August, he signed an executive order directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in official U.S. use. The order instructed the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to update federal geographic records accordingly.

Trump previously ordered U.S. federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico. He has also recently suggested renaming the U.S. state of New Mexico “New America” by posting an altered map on Truth Social. However, the White House has not announced a formal process to rename the state, and such a change would require action beyond a presidential order.
