Modi: Strengthening BRICS Must Go Hand in Hand With Global Governance Reform

DID Press: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for stronger cooperation among BRICS members alongside reforms to global governance structures and a greater role for countries of the Global South in international decision-making.

Speaking at the opening of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Modi said countries of the Global South are on the front lines of many global challenges but remain underrepresented in international decision-making.

Criticizing the current global governance structure, Modi said it resembles a pyramid in which power and decision-making are concentrated at the top, while countries most affected by those decisions have limited influence over shaping them.

Modi said countries of the Global South must move from being “rule-takers” to “rule-makers,” adding that India is ready to play a role in that process.

The Indian prime minister also stressed the need to chart a path for global reforms alongside the strengthening of BRICS. He said India would present a 10-point roadmap for global governance within the framework of the group.
