BRICS Calls for Lifting Unilateral Sanctions and Supports Iran

DID Press: The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi concluded with a declaration opposing unilateral sanctions imposed outside the framework of the United Nations, supporting Iran’s accession process to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and calling for the protection of peaceful nuclear facilities.

In the New Delhi Declaration, BRICS leaders condemned coercive measures and unilateral sanctions imposed outside the UN framework and called for the lifting of such restrictions.

On economic issues, the declaration expressed support for the accession processes of Iran and Ethiopia to the WTO and emphasized the need to reform the multilateral trading system.

The declaration also condemned any attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities operating under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.

On Gaza, BRICS members called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, opposed the forced displacement of Palestinians, and supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

BRICS leaders also stressed expanding the use of national currencies in trade, strengthening the New Development Bank and creating financial mechanisms independent of Western financial systems.

The New Delhi Declaration indicates that BRICS is seeking to translate shared political positions into practical economic mechanisms. Emphasis on the use of national currencies, strengthening the New Development Bank and opposition to unilateral sanctions reflects efforts to reduce members’ dependence on the Western-led financial system. Support for Iran’s WTO membership could also strengthen Tehran’s position in the bloc’s economic cooperation and signal the growing role of emerging economies in the global economic order.
