DID Press: U.S. defense officials said hackers gained unauthorized access to personal information belonging to nearly 3 million people through a personnel information system operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, affecting military personnel, civilian employees and others connected to the Pentagon.
According to reports, the breach targeted a system operated by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). The unauthorized access involved data belonging to about 2.76 million living individuals and 294,000 deceased individuals.
U.S. defense officials said the unauthorized access continued from October 2025 through July 2026. The vulnerability was subsequently identified and the system was remediated.
The compromised information included Social Security numbers as well as details about individuals’ employment records and duties.
The DMDC is one of the Pentagon’s main repositories of personnel information, maintaining records on active-duty and reserve service members, civilian employees, contractors, retirees, veterans and military family members.
Defense officials said there is currently no evidence that the exposed information has been misused. Authorities said affected individuals would be offered identity-protection and credit-monitoring services.
