Pope Leo XIV: AI Risks to Humanity Are Not ‘Fake News’

DID Press: Pope Leo XIV has warned that concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence to humanity are not “fake news” and should be taken seriously. Speaking to reporters aboard his flight from France, the pope called for greater attention to warnings from AI experts and stronger mechanisms to oversee the technology.

The remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump described concerns about AI posing serious risks to humanity as a “hoax” during his address to the United Nations General Assembly.

Pope Leo has previously warned about the potential consequences of AI. In his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, he called for responsibility, transparency and effective governance of AI, warning against delegating important or irreversible decisions entirely to automated systems.

During his visit to France, the pope also urged that new technologies remain at the service of human beings rather than becoming instruments of domination or injustice.

He has emphasized that addressing AI risks requires continued dialogue among governments, technology companies, researchers and civil society.
