UN Secretary-General Heads to Islamabad for Talks With Senior Pakistani Officials

DID Press: UN Secretary-General António Guterres left for Pakistan on Sunday evening on a pre-planned visit, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, said.

Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on Tuesday, where he will meet with senior Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and President Asif Ali Zardari.

According to the report, the UN secretary-general will also visit Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to observe efforts to strengthen the country’s preparedness and resilience against natural disasters following the devastating floods of 2022.

During his stay in Islamabad, Guterres will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

Dujarric said the visit will also provide an opportunity to discuss Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts between Iran and the United States. According to the United Nations, Pakistan has played a constructive role in supporting negotiations between the two countries.

Guterres is scheduled to return to New York on Thursday.
