OIC Meeting Ends in Baghdad with Strong Support for Palestine
DID Press: The 52nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) concluded on Sunday evening in Baghdad, Iraq, after two days of meetings and discussions.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the OIC secretary-general, described the meeting as a success during a press conference and thanked the Iraqi government, leadership and people for hosting the event and ensuring its orderly proceedings. He also expressed confidence that Iraq would effectively lead the organisation’s Council of Foreign Ministers in the coming period.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Baghdad Declaration and several resolutions reaffirming the central importance of the Palestinian issue, support for the rights of the Palestinian people, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Other issues discussed included the political situations in several OIC member states, the rights of Muslim minorities and communities, combating Islamophobia, and economic, social, humanitarian, cultural and scientific affairs.
Following the meeting, Ould Cheikh Ahmed stressed that the organisation must move beyond reaching agreement on resolutions and focus on implementing them.
According to the organisation, the 53rd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers will be held in the Republic of Benin, while the next summit of Islamic leaders is scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan. The meetings are intended to build on previous achievements and strengthen the effectiveness of joint cooperation among Muslim-majority countries.
